trans and intersex lexicon for neophytes – Sunday is the World Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, which promotes the rights of the LGBT community. Métro looks at the situation of transgender people.
Trans : A person who identifies as a gender other than the gender assigned at birth. Preferred term to transgender or transsexual, whose definitions are often disputed.
Cisgender : Defines a person who identifies as the same gender they were assigned (without surgery or hormonal treatment) at birth.
Gender assigned (or designated) at birth : Gender often assigned based on the appearance of the external genitalia. “Biological sex” is often incorrectly used to refer to the gender assigned at birth.
Gender identity : Gender with which one identifies, whether binary (male, female) or non-binary (fluid, agender, genderqueer, androgynous…). Everyone has one.
Gender expression : How a gender is expressed (clothing, gait, hairstyle, etc.). May not fit social norms for a given gender.
Binarism : Current of thought that considers genres as binary, opposite or contrary. Belief that there are only two true genders.
Intersex : A person whose sexed body at birth or during puberty does not meet the medically established definitions of “female” and “male” gender. She therefore presents a combination of atypical primary (external and internal genitalia) and secondary (breasts, body hair, muscles and bones) sexual traits.
Transition : Describes the journey that brings a person to an identity that meets their expectations.
Trans man : Person who identifies as a man and has a trans experience.
Trans woman : Person who identifies as a woman and has a trans experience.
Non-binary trans person : a person who identifies outside of the male-female binary or whose gender identity fluctuates.
