Kentucky gay couple awarded $100.000 after being denied marriage license

A gay couple in Kentucky, David Ermold and David Moore, has been awarded $100,000 by a federal jury after they were denied a marriage license by a former county clerk, Kim Davis. Davis, who identifies as a born-again Christian, first gained attention in 2015 when she refused to issue a marriage license to a gay couple "under God’s authority", leading to her brief incarceration. She was released after five days when her staff issued the marriage licenses, but her name was removed from the forms. In 2019, when taken to court for denying Ermold and Moore a marriage license, Davis claimed she was protected by sovereign immunity from her 2015 lawsuit. However, it was later ruled that she could be individually sued. Last year, District Judge David Bunning determined that Davis had violated couples’ constitutional rights by not issuing them marriage licenses. READ MORE
