Gay Travel Index 2025 : Iceland Tops the List, the United States Drops in Ranking
Iceland Ranks Among the Most LGBTQIA+ Friendly Countries
The Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025 has been released, offering a comprehensive overview of LGBTQIA+ rights and acceptance in 216 countries and regions. This year, Iceland has claimed a top spot alongside Malta, Canada, Portugal, and Spain, which already led the ranking in 2024.
Leading Countries in LGBTQIA+ Inclusion
Right behind the top five, Germany and New Zealand share the sixth place, followed by Australia, Norway, Uruguay, and Switzerland, all ranking eighth. The index evaluates various factors, including legislation, anti-discrimination policies, and overall social acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Progress in Thailand, but Little Change Across Asia

The 2025 index highlights Thailand’s significant progress as it became the first Southeast Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2024. This milestone has helped Thailand climb from 54th to 41st place. Meanwhile, Greece has seen a notable improvement, rising from 38th to 15th place, while Curaçao advanced from 70th to 58th after also legalizing same-sex marriage.
France Holds 26th Place, Georgia Sees a Major Decline
France remains in the 26th position in the global ranking. In contrast, Georgia has suffered a dramatic drop, falling from 109th to 162nd place due to newly introduced anti-LGBTQIA+ laws, largely influenced by growing Russian political control.
The U.S. Drops in the Ranking, Southern States Criticized
One of the most striking developments in the 2025 ranking is the decline of the United States, which has fallen from 41st to 48th place. This drop is largely attributed to increasing restrictions on transgender rights under the new Trump administration.
The index also examines regional disparities within the U.S. The most LGBTQIA+ friendly states include New York, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Conversely, the least inclusive states are Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Montana, and Oklahoma, which ranks last among U.S. states.
The Least LGBTQIA+ Friendly Countries
As in previous years, the worst-ranking countries for LGBTQIA+ rights remain Afghanistan, Chechnya, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, where LGBTQIA+ individuals face extreme discrimination and, in some cases, life-threatening legal consequences.
The Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025 continues to serve as a crucial resource for LGBTQIA+ travelers, highlighting both progress and setbacks worldwide.
