Trump’s Military Archives Suppression

A Massive Purge of Military Records

As part of his administration’s policy to eliminate references to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the U.S. military, Donald Trump has ordered a large-scale deletion of documents. According to the Associated Press, on February 26, the Pentagon directed all military branches to review years of publications—including photos, articles, and videos—to remove any mention perceived as supporting these initiatives.

Tens of Thousands of Documents at Risk

So far, more than 26,000 images have been identified for deletion, and this number could reach 100,000 when including social media posts and other content from the U.S. Department of Defense websites. This policy has led to the removal of numerous materials related to women and minority groups in the military.

Censorship with Absurd Consequences

The implementation of this directive has sometimes led to unexpected deletions. Some files have been flagged simply because their title contained the word “gay,” regardless of context. One of the most notable removals includes an image of the famous B-29 bomber Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945. The plane, named by its pilot in honor of his grandmother, was inadvertently caught up in this massive censorship operation.

This large-scale deletion campaign has raised concerns about its effectiveness and relevance, particularly in light of its unintended and sometimes absurd consequences.
