Young LGBTQ+ People Feel Safer Online Than in Real Life
Digital Spaces as a Safe Haven
A recent study reveals that LGBTQ+ youth feel significantly safer expressing their identity online than in person. However, many fear potential restrictions on queer content, which could limit their access to affirming spaces.
According to a joint report by Hopelab and the Born This Way Foundation, 44% of young LGBTQ+ individuals feel safe in digital environments, compared to just 9% in real life. This contrast is particularly pronounced among non-binary youth, who are twice as likely to disclose their gender identity online rather than in face-to-face interactions (80% vs. 40%).
Growing Concerns Over LGBTQ+ Content Censorship
The study highlights a growing fear among LGBTQ+ youth: 76% worry about government regulations that could restrict queer-affirming content online. These digital platforms are more than just social spaces—they serve as lifelines for those seeking representation, support, and resources.
Titled “Without This, I Wouldn’t Be Here Today”: The Experiences of LGBTQ+ Youth in Online Spaces, the study surveyed over 1,200 young individuals aged 15 to 24, with 50% identifying as BIPOC, 29% living in small towns or rural areas, and 20% struggling financially to meet basic needs.

The Critical Role of Online Communities
Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes, Vice President of Research and Evaluation at Hopelab, emphasizes the essential role of digital spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. "For many, these platforms are not just about communication—they are spaces of survival, connection, and affirmation," she explains.
LGBTQ+ youth use social media, forums, and online communities not only to express themselves but also to find mental health support, educational content, and peer networks. In an era where discrimination remains prevalent, these platforms provide a crucial refuge.
However, concerns about censorship loom large. Many fear that restrictive policies could erase vital LGBTQ+ content, leaving them isolated in a world where real-life acceptance is still a struggle.
Ensuring Inclusive and Safe Digital Spaces
Advocates stress the importance of protecting digital safe spaces where LGBTQ+ youth can express themselves freely. These platforms play a critical role in fostering mental well-being, social belonging, and self-acceptance.
As discussions around internet regulations continue, ensuring the preservation of inclusive online environments remains vital. For LGBTQ+ youth, the internet is more than just a tool—it’s a sanctuary.
