Catalonia Mobilizes Against the Ban on LGBT Events in Hungary
A Protest Against a Violation of Rights
In Barcelona, over fifty people gathered this Saturday in front of the Hungarian consulate to oppose the recent ban on LGBTQI+ events in Hungary. This ban, passed by the Hungarian Parliament earlier this week, restricts the LGBTQI+ community from organizing demonstrations and Pride marches.
A "Major Step Backward" for Rights
The demonstration was organized by the LGTBIcat Platform and Pride BCN, who strongly condemned the measure as a "major step backward for the rights and freedoms" of LGBTQI+ individuals. The organizers expressed deep concern over the situation, urging the European Union to take a "strong stand" against it. They also emphasized that Pride marches are not merely "celebrations" but, above all, "acts of resistance and protest."
Hungary’s Controversial New Law
On Tuesday, the Hungarian Parliament voted overwhelmingly (136 to 27) to amend the law on the right to assembly. The reform, pushed by the ruling Fidesz party, prohibits gatherings that "violate the prohibitions established in child protection laws." The law also introduces financial penalties and allows the use of facial recognition technology to identify participants.
The European Union’s Response
In reaction to this decision, the European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to fundamental freedoms. Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Preparedness, declared: "Our Union stands for freedom and equality. Everyone should have the right to be themselves, to live and love freely."
