UN Council Renews Mandate for LGBTQ Rights Expert
UN Extends LGBTQ Rights Mandate for Three More Years
The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to extend the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The renewed mandate, now extended through 2027, reinforces the UN's continued commitment to promoting and protecting LGBTQ rights around the world.
Mixed Reactions Among UN Member States
The vote saw strong support from 29 member nations, including France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, Spain, and South Africa. However, the resolution also faced opposition, with 15 countries—such as China, Qatar, Indonesia, Morocco, and Sudan—voting against it. Three nations—Benin, Ghana, and Kyrgyzstan—chose to abstain.
U.S. Withdraws from Participation Once Again
Although the United States rejoined the Human Rights Council in 2021, it is currently not participating in proceedings related to this resolution. The withdrawal follows a recent policy shift announced in February, mirroring the country's previous exit from the council in 2018 under the Trump-Pence administration.
Graeme Reid to Continue as Independent Expert
South African human rights expert Graeme Reid will remain in his position as the UN’s Independent Expert. Appointed in 2023, Reid brings years of advocacy experience, having previously led the LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch. His expertise and leadership are expected to be instrumental in advancing global efforts to end violence and discrimination against LGBTQ people.
